Fascinating post, John! I would love to listen to the interview, and I'm sure that Betty Zimmerman would as well. I will send you my email address asap.

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment.

Hi Vikki,

This is a very interesting post! You might be interested to know that we have an oral history of my great grandfather, Hugo Ernst Richter, and his wife, Helene Richter, discussing German life in the Hill Country. During the interview, Hugo describes the incident with Hans Adolf Hoppe in the context of a question about his family's Union sympathies during the Civil War. He talks about "Hoppe" being thrown down "Devil's Well" because he was a vocal Unionist. He also says his family survived by staying quiet about their feelings.

Your post references the 1941 article by Walter Hoppe Richter. Walter was Hugo Richter's nephew, so I'm certain that this oral history refers to the same story.

I would be happy to send you an MP3 copy of the interview. Please email me if you are interested.

Regards,
John

Jan,
I have not yet uncovered a William Harv Malone in my research. The John T. Malone in this story escaped Texas with his wife and young children in 1861. My research of the John T. Malone family (parents, brothers, sisters, nephews, nices, children) follows their wagon train journey from Iowa to Washington/Oregon in 1864. I would be interested in your story.
Jan, I am not familiar with the name William Harv Malone. But that's not surprising, since the Flaugher story was passed to me by Betty Zimmerman, and is not the result of my own research. I have emailed your question to Betty, and asked her to post here if she has any information on your family. If there's anyone else out there who recognizes this name, feel free to comment

Thanks for visiting the site!
