Thank you so much, Suzanne, for your comments! And, of course, I couldn’t have written the article without help from you, John Dorff, Betty Zimmerman, and Kenneth Fuchs. Since retiring from academia two years ago, I’ve been able to do more of what I love–interacting directly with people about their family stories. I have had some interactions with NPR; was interviewed on both the “To the Best of Our Knowledge” and Veronica Rueckert radio shows. NPR’s “Radio Diaries” series was at one point interested in the story of the mixed-race descendants of Newt and Rachel Knight, but apparently that project faded away for reasons I don’t quite understand.

Projects such as NPR’s Story Corps have the potential to generate far greater understanding of the history of “ordinary” people (allowing us to see, as in the Hoppe/Flaugher story, that ordinary people’s lives are often truly extraordinary) than do academic articles, tucked away as they are in journals read mostly by other academics.

I’m delighted by the extent to which genealogists like yourself and others have contributed vital information to Renegade South, and I strive always to do justice to the stories told here. So thank you again for your encouraging remarks.

Vikki, This is such a wonderful article you wrote about Dead Man’s Hole. I really admire your research and writing skills also! I’ve had good intentions about my genealogical research and yet have been involved in other things. You are an inspiration for me to take up the research once again!

I just shared your article with some genealogist friends in Colorado. They had mentioned the NPR Story Corps project. Have you been involved with that?

By the way, I am happy that some of you, who are younger, are interested in genealogy now – such as my nephew, John Dorff!

Hoping to visit with you more one of these days!

Oops, the first link “The Bandera Tragedy Tree”, was a tragedy, but not for unionists, it seems the victims were confederates but robbed and hanged by fellow confederates. Still an interesting little known aspect of Texas history though.
